Coventry Oak, Coventry 06/02/15

Coventry Oak in Coventry is part of The Flaming Grill chain, a typical pub-stlye atmosphere. The outside and car park area isn't overly attractive but as soon as you walk in the pub gives the first impressions of a typical family restaurant. Cheap and cheerful. It was huge, very busy and full of atmosphere.

It was very busy with lots of families eating. having a drink and everyone seemed to be having a good time. We had to find our own table, its an order at the bar type of restaurant. Which is what you expect from a cheap place. The one thing I would say is, seeing as its not a waitress service style there should be a few more team members on the bar, as it was quite slow getting our drinks and food orders taken.

The menu is huge, so many choices! They offer starters, kebabs, classics, steaks, salads, sandwiches, grills and the flaming grill challenges. The faming challenges are meals that are huge and if you manage to eat it all you get it free. Not only that, they also do the famous Doughnut Burger - heart attack on a plate!

We decided to get a sharing starter between us.

The Ultimate Sharer: Southern fried chicken skewers, breaded mushrooms, stuffed potato dog, garlic ciabatta, corn on the cob and onion rings, served with garlic mayo and BBQ sauce.
£7.29

This was huuuuge! I can see why its called the Ultimate Sharer and you definitely need to share it, even between three of us we struggled to finish it all! Each section was piping hot and tasted very good. The southern fried chicken skewers were crispy and had a good kick, the breaded mushrooms were very good, the stuffed potato dog was something I had never tried before and was very different but was good. Not the healthiest of starters, but it was yummy!

I went for one of the Grill Meals as my main course.

Chicken New Yorker - Chicken breast fillets topped with crispy bacon, HP™ Smokey BBQ sauce and melted mozzarella. Served on sizzling onions and peppers, with chips and peas
£6.49
It was presented nicely, the left side was on a sizzling hot plate which I liked, for the price the portion size is so generous! I couldn't believe all of this was only £6.49, bargain! I changed the peas to coleslaw. It was very good, it was different to usual Hunters Chicken - the chicken was cooked very well, not dry at all and it was served on caramelised onions and peppers - almost similar to a fajita with the melted mozzarella and BBQ sauce on top. Very yummy and a nice change to the usual pub Hunters Chicken. The chips were also very good, they were crispy on the outside but soft and bouncy in the middle - just as chips should be! This was a very good meal and I couldn't complain - for the price it was incredibly good value!

This is a very good restaurant, nothing particularly special but for a cheap and cheerful family meal, this is a brilliant place - good value, good service and generous portions.
