I was so excited for this. I love the chain of Crazy Bear Hotels and have always wanted to go to one. For Sam's birthday me and the girls decided to get a joint present and got her a a 6 course tasting Thai meal at The Crazy Bear Hotel in Stadhampton, Oxford. The hotel is absolutely beautiful, I definitely want to stay in one for an evening. The reception area is inside the red bus, so cool. I couldn't wait to try the food, the menu sounded delicious and I had heard so many good things about this place …
We were shown to our table and the waitress took our drinks order. The service was very good at the start but it did get slower as the meal went on - the drinks were taking a while to come and the bill took ages to come over. They offer Premium Classic and Premium Vegetarian options for the meals and both sound very delicious.
Shrimp Crackers with Sweet Chilli Sauce
A very usual starter for Thai/Chinese meals - they were crunchy and yummy and had quite a kick to them.
Steamed Edamame with Japanese Chilli Powder & Rock Salt
I usually find edamame very boring and think its overrated but the one at The Crazy Bear was very good - it was fresh, crunchy and the chilli powder and salt helped to give them some flavour, they certainly were not boring and I really enjoyed them.
Sashimi Seabass, Wasabi and Soy Sauce
I really enjoyed this, it looked very pretty on the plate too. I have always been wary of sashimi but I thoroughly enjoyed this, it was tender and the soy sauce and wasabi helped to give it some flavour. It was nice and light and not too filling.
Wagu Mesu, Fresh Seaweed, Prawn & Crab Salad
This was very good too, I wish I could have this as my lunch everyday! It was very fresh and refreshing tasting. The seaweed was perfectly cooked and tender, the prawns were cooked to perfection and topped with sesame seeds. A very light meal which was full of flavour.
Tiger Prawn, Egg Fried Noodle Stir Fry with Beansprouts & Spring Onions
Duck Curry with Pineapple & Lychee
Japanese Salad with White Asparagus, Avocado, Crispy Tofu, Onion, Rocket & Sesame Dressing
Grilled Asparagus with Teriyaki Sauce & Rice
All of the dishes were so tasty. The noodles were fresh and full of flavour, the prawns were cooked perfectly and the vegetables were al-dente. A very good dish. The duck curry was my favourite! It was sweet, tangy and spicy. The duck was tender and melted in the mouth and went so well with the pineapple and tangy flavours of the curry sauce. The Japanese salad was very fresh and went well with the hot dishes, the tofu was battered but was actually very tasty - which was good as tofu can be a little bit boring, the avocado was delicious and the sesame dressing complimented the dish and went well with all the parts. The rice and asparagus helped bring the dish together and were good side dishes to the delicious tasting food. I loved each part and they were all full of flavour, authentic tasting and fresh.
Dessert
Strawberries & Ice Cream with Strawberry Sauce - this was a very nice dessert, a good refreshing way to cleanse the pallet after the spicy Thai food. The ice cream was vanilla, I like when you can see the actually vanilla seeds in ice cream as you know its fresh. This ice cream had an unusual taste to it too - when we asked the waitress she explained it was vanilla and nut ice cream, that explained the unusual taste. But it was very good, the strawberries were fresh and succulent and this was a lovely way to end a delicious meal.
I was certainly very full at the end but felt satisfied and was impressed by the food and the quality of the 6 courses. They could improve the service slightly but there was only one waitress working so I understand and the food did make up for it. We had a very good day, the hotel is stunning and I would love to go back and try their other menus.
