Kayal became a favourite of mine in June after going to the Leamington one, this time we ventured to the Leicester branch after watching my mum in her play - Richard III at The Curve Theatre. A group of us booked a table and went to Kayal after the theatre. After how amazing the Leamington one was I couldn't wait to go again, I was hoping it was just as good. Kayal is a South Indian restaurant, offering different sorts of cuisine and it is certainly is different to your usually curry house down the road!
The menu is amazing, so varied and so much choice. It is certainly different to the usual Indian restaurant and they have many unusual dishes from breads, to dosas.
We decided to order the same 'Pre Snacks & Pickles' as we had them last time and they were so delicious.
Pre Snacks
£4.89
Achappam - crunchy snack made from rice flour, coconut, black sesame seeds and cumin seeds (flower shaped one).
Pappadavada - paddodoms dipped in special better of rice flour, cumin and sesame seeds and deep fried in oil.
Nenthraka Varuthathu - banana slices seasoned with turmeric water and deep fried.
Pappodoms - plain, flat, thin and crispy snacks.
They came with different chutneys and mango and lemon pickles
I think for the price you get a very fair portion and its certainly different to the standard plain pappodoms you usually get at your local Indian. The Achappam is my favourite - it is soft and flaky and full of flavour, you can really taste the coconut too and went really well with the coconut chutney. The Pappadavada is the red one and this also very good, but I couldn't tell the different between this and normal paddodoms except the colour but still, very tasty. The banana slices gave a nice sweet touch. A very good start to the meal and everyone enjoyed them.
Me and Jayne decided to get two starters and share them between us, our favourite thing to do as we get to try two different starters.
Starters:
Chicken Puffs
£4.99
Spiced Prawns
£5.79
Both starters were presented very well and I feel they were a very good portion size for the price. The Chicken Puffs is chicken in puff pastry served with salad and chantey - they reminded me of sausage rolls but with chicken. They definitely need the sauces otherwise they would be too dry but they were very tasty and the chicken was full of flavour. The Prawns were delicious, king prawns were spiced in different Indian spices - they were just the right amount of spice too, they were not too spicy but they had a little bit of a kick. They were so flavoursome and both of these were fantastic starters.
I knew exactly what to have for my main course …
Main
Masala Dosa
£6.99
This was delicious! As always, it was huge! Dosas are always massive and they are such good value - I took half home with me too for lunch the next day, everyone in the office was very envious. The dosa was light and fluffy and filled with seasoned potatoes, onions and peas - which is the traditional filling for a Masala Dosa. I really enjoyed this, it was full of flavour and they are such a yummy light dinner, they are not too filling or heavy. You do need the sauces though otherwise they would be a little dry but the sauces help and compliment the Dosas perfectly. I really enjoyed this main course and amazing value.
Another amazing meal at Kayal - the Leicester one was just as good as the Leamington one, the service is brilliant, the staff was so attentive and friendly and they are so knowledgable about the food and the menu. The food is delicious, full of flavour and I'm not usually a massive fan of Indian food but South Indian is quickly becoming one of my favourites, the flavour combinations are delicious. Kayal is not cheap but it is worth every penny. Everyone needs to go.
