Fumo, Birmingham - 18/11/14

I have been so excited about trying this place for months and tonight was finally the night. my boyfriend, Tom took me to celebrate my Graduation and I was off to Florida for 10 days. It's an upmarket cocktail, tapas restaurant, very stylish and sophisticated. Fumo was found under renowned San Carlo umbrella. They offer a marble cocktail bar you can sit at with tables all round, this trendy restaurant is a perfect addition to Birmingham's City Centre.

They offer a tapas menu with a wide array of choices from vegetarian, to pizza to beautiful meat and fish dishes.

It was so busy inside even for a Tuesday night - very popular place!

I started the evening with a Bellini - off course!

The cocktails are between £8-12, not cheap but cocktails don't tend to be cheap anymore!

Beautiful marble tables with a sophisticated setting.

We decided to order a couple of dishes to begin with, the waiter explained the food comes as its ready and in no particular order. This is my favourite way to dine - loads of different plates on one table, it gives you chance to try things you probably wouldn't usually order.

The dishes are between £3-£11, not too expensive but it all depends how much you can eat - me and Tom both have a big appetite so ordered 7 dishes! The food was so good I just couldn't stop!

The Food

Mozzarella Balls

Grilled Aubergine with Mozzarella, Tomato and Anchovies

Breaded Calamari with Tartare Sauce

All three of these dishes were delicious, the mozzarella balls were crispy on the outside but gooey melted cheese filled the middle. The aubergine was cut so thin and grilled perfect and complimented the mozzarella and tomato so well and the calamari wasn't chewy at all and was perfectly breaded - very dunk worthy! So far, an amazing start to the meal and we couldn't wait to try some other dishes. I was worried the dishes would be small and wouldn't be enough for two of us - but luckily there was plenty.

Lobster Risotto

Belly Pork

Seabass

Sweet Potatoes

Very reasonable size dishes, all of which were exquisite. The Lobster Risotto was beautiful, little pieces of lobster fried in butter hidden amongst perfectly cooked risotto rice. That dish went down very well! Next, my favourite - Belly Pork! And this was one was no exception - it was delicious, cooked so well, tender and succulent with crispy skin on the outside, it was served with a potato and gravy-like sauce. We were fighting over this dish!

On the other half of the table belonged the Seabass - again lapped up with the same gusto as the other dishes. The fish was cooked so well, flaky and flavoursome. We ordered a side order of the Sweet Potatoes - after they had been recommended to me by someone and I'm glad we did order them, they were delicious! The sweet potatoes were cooked to perfection, topped with fried lardons and onions - which made them taste even better! I honestly couldn't fault any of the dishes, the were all so good and tasty. I want to try everything on the menu!

We decided to have dessert because.. well, why not!?

The Dolci Cicchetti

The sharing dessert, a board with a selection of all their desserts in miniature, beautifully presented. This included, Panacotta, Tiramisu, Chocolate Brownie, Strawberry and Lemon Cheesecakes. This was to die for!! Each dessert was yummy as the next and they all were packed with flavour and goodness. I couldn't fault this dessert and would recommend it to anyone that visits Fumo - perfection on a board!

Summary

Plenty of food and with the bill coming to about £60 for two us, I felt this was worth every penny. The quality of food is outstanding. This place can be a fancy bar, a lunch spot, a quick bite to eat before going out or a huge meal with friends and family. You can make Fumo what you want it to be, and its effortlessly special. I want to go back every day.
