Turtle Bay, Birmingham, 12/04/15

This is quickly becoming one of my favourite restaurants, this time I tried the Turtle Bay in Birmingham. I was hoping it loved up to my visit to the Leamington branch as that was very good. It was a Sunday evening and I was meeting my friend, Matt was a spot of dinner and some cocktails. Because Sunday is the new Saturday and therefore, this mean cocktails!

It was very busy, we decided to take a seat at the bar. The atmosphere was very good and lively, the service was a little slow - I think they need more bar staff as one guy was trying to serve everyone, he did a good job but it was slow and it took ages to get served!

Between 6-7pm and 10-11pm they offer 2for1 cocktails, which is a fantastic idea, the only thing is you have to have two of the same cocktails - you can't have two different ones. Which is a shame but I understand why they do it. The cocktails are £6.95 each, which is actually reasonably priced for cocktails anyway as they usually average at £7.50 ish - so its definitely a bargain when you get the 2for1.

Bahama Mama - Koko Kanu & Banana Liqueur with Pineapple & Grenadine

This was a very tasty cocktail, served in a Martini glass - I was glad to have two as they were yummy, the banana wasn't too overpowering either, as I was worried it may be. The flavours all worked together very well. I'm really enjoying rum since I went to Jamaica in March.

We decided to didn't want a full on sit down meal and instead decided to order a few starters/sides and eat them at the bar whilst chatting and drinking - what a perfect Sunday evening! Monday morning seemed ages away!

All the starters are £4.95 and sides £2.35 - which I feel is very reasonable.

Jamaican Fried Bait - Lightly Spiced & Crisp Whitebait with Fresh Lime
& Coriander Mayo

Jerk Pit Ribs - Jerk Spiced Marinated, Grilled & Glazed Pork Ribs &
Sour Orange Chutney

Pulled Pork Salad - Slow Roast Pulled Jerk Pork, Rocket, Fresh Butternut Squash, Mango,
Orange & Coconut Shavings

Duck Roll - Slow Roasted Shredded Duck, Onion, Tamarind, Soy Sauce, Chilli
& Sugarcane Orange Chutney

Jerk Pit Prawns - Whole Shell-On Grilled King Prawns, Herb Chilli
& Garlic Butter Flatbread

Sweet Potato Fries
Yes, we ordered all this food between two of us! Even the bar staff commented on how much we ordered, oops! But we were hungry and wanted to try it all! The Whitebait was very good, it can sometimes be a little boring but this one had a nice spice to it and the lime & coriander dressing set it off very nicely and calmed down the jerk flavouring. The Jerk Ribs were very tasty, they were marinated in jerk seasoning which was a little too spicy for me, but the orange chutney helped to give it a sweeter taste and take away some of the spice. The Pulled Pork Salad was very good too, it was shredded strips of tender pulled pork in a delicious salad that was a lovely blend of sweet and savoury, the mango and orange actually went so well with the pork and rocket. Very tasty salad! The Duck Rolls were probably my favourite, they were similar to Chinese Duck Rolls - they were shredded duck inside a wrap with chilli and tamarind, which is one of my favourite flavours! Lastly, the King Prawns - they were so juicy and tender, a little fiddly as they had the shells on but they were tender and cooked perfectly, I loved the flatbread they came on too it was so tasty!

Over all, another very good experience at Turtle Bay, it was very similar to the Leamington branch - the food was so tasty, cocktails were good but the service was a little slow and the waitress that bought over the food to us was a little rude, she pretty much threw the plates at us! I would return to this one, especially on a night out to have some cocktails before and make the most of the 2for1!
