For mums birthday me and dad bought her tickets for Matilda the musical in London at the Cambridge Theatre. The show actually originated in Stratford-upon-Avon at the RSC- just down the road! But, we missed it and luckily it moved to the West End and mum had made SO many hints that she wanted to see it, so her birthday was the perfect opportunity and as me and dad were in London for the Jamie Oliver cookery day we thought we could tie both together and make a whole day out of it. The tickets are not cheap but theatre isn't I guess?!
So here is my review on the show:
It was at the Cambridge Theatre in Soho. My mum was SO surprised when we turned up here, she thought we were heading home. What a surprise!
We had brilliant seats, so near the front and the set was stunning! The floating blocks spelt Matilda and the ceiling and walls were covered in books and toy blocks. Was very clever and instantly set the scene.
I feel this show will be entertaining audiences for years, it is probably one of the best musicals since Billy Elliot.
The show starts with a group of signing children singing a song called; Miracle. "My mummy tells me I'm her little miracle…" The starting song shows there is something miraculous about this theatre show.
Dennis Kelly, who adapted the Roald Dahl classic into a stage musical. Even though he is known for making depressing, thought-provoking shows. Matilda turned this around! Here he showed, humour, joy and tenderness and his script was just as, if not better than the Roald Dahl story.
Meanwhile, Tim Minchin the comedian came up with brilliant jokes and lyrics that kept us, the audience captivated the entire time. The show is so clever; the way it shows up the cruelty of our age. The heroine, Matilda suddenly realises she has magic powers is abused by her television-loving, rude and selfish family who don't take her intelligence or love of reading very seriously. Also, Mrs Trunchbull - the head mistress at the school is a comedic brutal woman who depicts the brutality adults can inflict on children.
The children in the show are brilliant, they have amazing voices and are so confident. The show is full of mischief from Matilda getting up to "little bit naughty" things and the actress performs to a top class standard.
I felt the star of the show was Mrs Trunchbull's character - the hammer throwing, nasty head teacher who comes on in full drag, a massive bust and mood swings to match. She is so realistic and a top class character!
It ended, and wow what a fantastic show but it ends not knowing whether to cry or laugh.
You may even do both.
