The Black Swan, Henley 19/04/2012

Once again, this restaurant! Me & my dad decided to go for some food one night as my mum was out, on a thursday night they do an offer for two main course for £12 with a glass of wine each, which is an incredibly good offer! Its obviously a limited menu but it has a lot of choice! We went to the bar where we ordered the two glasses of wine and set up a tab, we chose our table and looked at the menu.

We both decided to go for the gammon, egg and chips which is a good old traditional pub favourite! The good thing about this pub is its atmosphere and I like how they do the orders at the table which is unusual at a cheap pub but that is a good assentive for me to go back to somewhere again!

As you can see the portion size is massive and its a proper hearty pub food meal! The chips are cooked perfectly, the egg is runny and the gammon is succulent! Just how it should be! The service here is so good and the food came under 20 minutes after we ordered! We both really enjoyed this meal and would definitely have it again and for £6 each how can you complain?!

I decided to have a desert as the meal was so cheap, would be rude not to!
I went for a very traditional jam sponge with ice cream with two spoons! The sponge was perfectly bouncy and moist and complimented with the jam so well! This was a gorgeous desert and such good value for £3.95!

This is a brilliant pub, with proper hearty pub food at a very reasonable price!

The Crabmill, Preston Bagot 17/04/2012

Finally me & Jayne got a chance to try The Crabmill, neither of us had ever been before and its only down the road from where we live! Ive heard a lot of good things about it as well so it was about time we tried the food!

The place is lovely inside, its really modern with a lot of light. We chose a table in the bar area and looked at the menu, there was SO much choice that we could barley decide what wanted to eat! We decided to go for two starters to start then two sandwiches after to share.

We went for the: Potted prawn, crayfish and brown shrimps with spiced nutmeg butter and melba toast & muscles in a tomato and chilli sauce which was on the specials of the day. The service was very good and the starters came within 15 minutes of ordering them and the waiter asked us a lot if we wanted anything else and if we were happy with our meals.

As you can see by the pictures the portion sizes are a fair size. the potted prawn and crayfish was very unusual, the nutmeg gave it a very unusual flavour which we weren't too sure we liked, but it was nice and the melba toast was a good touch and over all it was a very nice starter which we were glad we tried as prawns and crayfish are two of our favourite fish, it was unusual but good! The mussels were brilliant as mussels always are! They were cooked perfectly and the sauce was yummy, I prefer tomato sauces to creamy wine sauces so this was a bonus for me. we finished every last bite of both of these starters and were very impressed! The prawn dish wasn't cheap at £8.25 which is expensive for a starter but it was worth it! I can't remember how much the mussels were as they are not on the normal La Carte menu but they were no more than £7 which is reasonable for mussels!

For our sandwiches we shared a pork, apple and leek sausage baguette with wholegrain mustard mayonnaise and red onion jam at £6.50 & the hoisin duck, spring onion and cucumber wrap at £6.45. & we shared a bowl of chips between us.

Once again the portion sizes were pretty big for just sandwiches! The sausage sandwich was amazing and  a definite favourite for me! The sausages were so thick and juicy and you definitely taste the apple and leek in them and the wholegrain mustard mayonnaise and red onion jam worked so well with the sausages and gave it that perfect mixture of sweet with savoury! The baguette it was on was lovely as well, so crunchy and fresh! This sandwich was to die for and I could have eaten three!! The wrap was also very nice and the duck with hoisin was very tasty! Both of these sandwiches were lovely and I would definitely go to The Crabmill again!!

Handmade Burger Company, Solihull 10/04/2012

Me & my friend Rachel were shopping in Solihull and were going to the cinema to see Titanic 3D and we decided to get some food before the film. We went to one of my favourites, The Handmade Burger Company which is a really nice restaurant that does every sort of burger imaginable!

The actual restaurant is really spacious and the decor is modern and clean. We sat down and the waiter came and bought us menu's, you have to order everything at the bar which I don't really like doing as I like my drinks bought to me. It took us ages to decide as they had recently changed the menu and had new dishes on there!

We went up to the bar to order and both order a refillable drink each, which are a good idea as you can drink as much as you like but its annoying having to keep getting up to get it. We decided to order two burgers and share them. I went for the beef, bacon and cheese burger and Rachel went for the peri-peri chicken burger. We also ordered one side of chips between us as they are a massive portion!

The beef burger was definitely my favourite as I prefer beef burgers to chicken burgers and I found the peri peri sauce a little bit too spicy for me. However the beef was cooked perfectly and the cheese and bacon gave it a really good taste and over all I really enjoyed the burger. They are MASSIVE so it's really hard to finish. The chips are cooked perfectly and are how chips should be!

Over all this is a really good meal and continues to be one of my favourite restaurants! The service is brilliant as well with the food coming quickly and its of a very good quality!

The Red Lion, Claverdon 7/04/2012

Me & Jayne were planning to go for lunch at The Crabmill in Preston Bagot but it was closed for a private function so we went up to Claverdon where we came across The Red Lion, we have both heard a lot about this pub and its very popular so we thought why not?! The board outside on the car park said that they were doing a lunch time menu from 12-2.30 & we only wanted something little so we were happy they did a lunch time offer! However when we walked in, the pub itself is really lovely and the decor is very old but with a modern twist! We sat down and the waitress bought us our menus and I asked her if they had the lunch time menu which she replied that they haven't got a lunch time menu and its just the La Carte menu, which was disappointing!

We looked at the normal menu which was verrrry expensive for a lunch time so we decided to just have starters and share them. The service here was pretty good and the food came quickly!

We firstly went for the sharing platter of Baked Box Camembert with red onion jam & rustic bread
The presentation of this starter was really nice and I liked the board it came out on! The bread it came with was gorgeous, it was so fresh and was still warm and buttery, I was very impressed with the bread as camembert can be let down a lot by the bread! The actual camembert however was a bit of a let down, I didn't like how they put the red onion jam on top it would have been better on the side as it all went into the camembert which was rather messy! I found the camembert over ally cheesy, which I know sounds silly as it is cheese but it tasted as if it was almost off?! Which wasn't good! Neither of us were very impressed with this & for £8.95 it wasn't exactly cheap!

For after we decided to have two starters as our main as the mains were so expensive! I went for the Smoked Haddock fishcake with poached egg, baby spinach and hollandaise & Jayne went for the fresh mussels, scallops calamari & tiger prawns in a rich cherry tomato stew served with toasted bread!
The fish cake presentation was very good and looked expensive and smart! However the vision was better than the taste, the spinach was probably the best part of this meal! The fishcake was very dry and tasted like curry, which it didn't state in the menu because if it did I wouldn't have chose it as curry isn't one of my favourite flavours and I felt it didn't mix well with the smoked haddock at all as they are two very strong flavours. Smoked haddock needs something more simple with it and the curry flavour just over powered the fish! The hollandaise was nice but was only average and I felt the flavours just didn't gel well together, as separate parts they were all nice but put together and it just didn't work at all! I wasn't impressed with this dish and for £6.95 just for a starter I was incredibly disappointed!
Jayne felt exactly the same about her dish which is full of her favourite fish but she just felt it was too fishy, the sauce didn't even taste like tomato apparently and was just too watery! She said the bread was the best apart of the whole dish and for £7.50 it was very expensive for a starter that was a big disappointment!

Over all we were not very happy and I would give this restaurant 2/10 and definitely wouldn't return!!

London 4-5th April 2012

Yo Sushi! 4/04/2012
My two very good friends, Jayne & Sam bought me a trip to London for my birthday to go to the new Westfield shopping centre and stay in a hotel over night. Perfect opportunity for loads of meals!
We arrived in London around lunch time and were starving so we head for Oxford Street and went to Selfridges and decided to eat at Yo Sushi! Im the only one out of us three that actually like sushi but they do a lot of other options on the menu.

I like the set up of Yo Sushi! As a restaurant, you sit down and there is a revolving table going round and round the middle of the bar area and you can pick up whatever bowl takes your fancy and how much you pay for each bowl depends on the colour of the bowl!

I firstly picked up an orange bowl with sushi in it, it was the Assorted Fish Maki which was two each of salmon, tuna and prawn and chive maki.

I really enjoyed this as sushi is one of my favourite foods! The prawn ones were probably my favourite but I enjoyed them all and they taste so fresh which is good!

I then chose a pink and orange bowl the pink bowl was Prawn Tempura which was black tiger prawns friend in a crispy light batter with tempura sauce & the orange bowl was Prawn Korroke which was Crispy Japanese breaded prawn and potato croquettes with kimchee mayonnaise sauce.
Both of these dishes were really nice but I preferred the Prawn Tempura because I found the Prawn Korroke a little spicy and dry. But overall both of these dishes were really yummy and I ate it all up!

I found Yo Sushi! a really good restaurant and it is really reasonably priced as you pay per dish. My dishes all together came to £11 which for three different meals is very reasonable! I really enjoyed it and would definitely come to Yo Sushi! more often!

Planet Hollywood 4/04/2012
We then went to Planet Hollywood in Leicester Square for dinner, we didn't go till about 9 because we had ate a lot at Yo Sushi! Planet Hollywood is a really funky restaurant with a good vibe inside, it has loud music and pictures of famous people all over the walls. The menu is massive and has so much choice! We decided to order a cocktail first and I went for the Titanic:
This was Skyy Vodka, peach schanapps, coconut rum, orange, pineapple juice and lemonade. This was a gorgeous cocktail regardless of the name ha!

We then looked at the menu and decided just to go straight to mains as the portions are massive at Planet Hollywood! The service is really good there and the waitresses are really friendly and helpful! The food took about 20 minutes to arrive after we ordered which is good as we were all very hungry!

I decided to go for the BBQ Pork Ribs for £15.95
Jayne went for the Prime Scottish Sirloin Steak for £18.50
& Sam went for La Lasagna for £12.50
As you can see the BBQ Pork Ribs were massive and were served with a lot of fries and coleslaw. This was gorgeous and the ribs were cooked perfectly, they fell of the bone and the sauce on them was so tangy! The fries were cooked perfectly as well, they were crispy on the outside yet soft on the inside, just how chips should be! I couldn't manage to eat it all but it was so good! £15.95 isn't cheap for a main course especially just ribs but you do get a lot for the money and it is very tasty!
Jayne really enjoyed her steak as well,  it was a 10oz premium centre cut sirloin steak chargrilled to order served with peppercorn sauce, mash potato or chips and a grilled tomato and green beans. She ordered it medium rare and it was cooked perfectly! This was a very good dish but was expensive for £18.50 however you do get a 10oz steak for that price and you can tell the quality is a very high standard!
Sam went for her original favourite! She has this meal every time she comes to Planet Hollywood, the La Lasagna which is a californian twist to a class lasagne! Fresh pasta tubes filled with ricotta cheese and bolognese meat sauce, fried to a golden brown and covered with a garlic creams and tomato basil sauce. This is a good twist on a normal lasagna due to the fact its in pasta tubes not strips! It definitely looks good and Sam said its amazing! Over all I think this is a good price for £12.50 which is pretty good for a massive portion!

We decided not to have deserts as we were really full but we all really enjoyed this meal, it was expensive but worth it!

Pinkberry 5/04/2012
The next day we went to Westfield shopping centre in Stratford City where we did a lot of shopping! As a snack before we had dinner later on we decided to go to Pinkberry which is a frozen yogurt cafe. They have 5 different choices of flavours, classic, mango, chocolate, pomegranate or lychee. I decided to go for the mango flavour as its my favourite fruit! You can then choose what toppings you want they have a choice of hundreds .. fresh fruit such as, raspberries, strawberries, kiwi, blueberries, pineapple, mango. They also do dry toppings, cereal, brownie bits, gummy bears, shaved chocolate, crushed oreos, almonds and so many more! You then choose a sauce to put on top of it all from either, honey, caramel, chocolate or pomegranate juice.

I went for the mango flavour yogurt with strawberries and raspberries with smarties, shaved chocolate, brownie bits and caramel sauce! Its so yummy and really refreshing!

Las Iguanas 5/04/2012
We decided to go to Las Iguanas for our dinner as none of us had ever been before! Its a mexican/Caribbean restaurant with a lot of choice! The restaurant was in a food court upstairs in the shopping centre so was open plan, the restaurant looked out onto the shopping centre below, it was really modern and open! We looked at the menu and me & Jayne decided to go for the 5 tapas dishes for £23.00 to share between us whilst Sam had the Cuban Sandwich.

The 5 tapas dishes we went for were:

Nachos: home cooked corn tortilla chips with melted cheese, topped with aiji, jalapeños, salsa, soured creams & guacamole.

Chicken Wings: Spicy hot chicken wings sauced up with either: honey peri peri, spicy bbq jerk, vivo hot hot or voom warning seriously hot. We decided to go for the honey peri peri as we don't really like spicy food!
Gambas: greedy whole prawns, split and cooked in a garlic, lemon & chilli sauce served with bread.
Cha-Cha Chorizo: smokey pork and garlic chorizo, braised slow and lazy with onions in red wine, tomato and smoked jalapeño sauce.
& Pata Taquito: Rich shreds of roast duck and caramelised onion rolled in a flour tortilla and char grilled with sticky chill jam.

All of the dishes were really yummy and were pretty big! The nachos were as expecting to be honest, the tortilla chips were crunchy & there was a perfect amount of cheese and sauce on them, we should have asked for it without jalapeños though as we both don't like them due to them being too spicy! The chicken wings were probably my least favourite out of the five, which is unusual as I usually love chicken wings but I found these a bit dry and the sauce was sooo spicy and we didn't even pick the spiciest sauce! The prawns were gorgeous! Tiger prawns are one of my favourites even though they can be messy trying to take the shell of isn't the easiest of tasks! However these were worth the messiness, they were lovely and the garlic, lemon & chilli sauce gave them a kick! The Cha-Cha chorizo was really unusual but I really liked it, the sauce was very rich though and you couldn't eat a lot of it! The chorizo and pork were cooked perfectly and were so tender and the sauce they were in was very tasty! The bread helped to soak up the sauce as well and make it seem less rich. The Pata Taquito was probably my favourite out of the five dishes. the duck was so succulent and went perfectly well with the caramelised onions, it made it the perfect combination of sweet and savoury. The sticky chilli jam worked really well with the wrap as well and over all was a gorgeous dish!

This was a lovely meal which we all enjoyed thoroughly and was different to most restaurants and I really  liked it, I would definitely go back to this place again and try more of the tapas dishes!

The Harvester, Shirley 2/04/2012

Me & Rachel went for a quick lunch in her split from work, we decided to go to The Harvester in Shirley as we were near the area and its cheap and cheerful!

We sat down and looked at the menus.. I went for the bacon & cheese burger with chips. But at The Harvester once you've ordered your food you can then go up to the salad bar and have a bowl of salad as your starter. They have a lot of choice from lettuce to raisins!

I had lettuce, cucumber, potato salad, peppers, bacon bits, croutons. This is a perfect starter before your main because it doesn't fill you up too much but is really enjoyable to eat! The salad bar is definitely my favourite bit of The Harvester!

My main arrived probably about 15 minutes after the salad...
As you can see by the picture, the presentation isn't exactly brilliant and makes the plate look rather empty. The chips were really soggy as well and you don't get very many, however you are only paying £6.50 for it so you can't complain too much! The burger was nice, however I felt the beef was over done and was a bit burnt as I like my beef cooked medium-rare it was too done for me. The bacon and cheese in the burger was a nice touch though and gave the burger more flavour! Overall this main course was average and was ok for the price but I wouldn't expect to pay anymore for it than £6.50. I would give this 4/10!

We decided to share a desert though and The Harvester do a really good range of Sundaes so we decided to try one of them.
We went for one of the new ones of the menu: The Mini Egg Sundae.

This was massive and perfect for two people to share! The ice cream was lovely and the mini eggs gave it such a good touch. Over all this is a really good desert for £5!
